Mount Royal scored 32 seconds into the game and three more times in the first period alone and cruised to a 6-3 win over the University of Regina on Saturday night in Canada West men's hockey action at The Co-operators Centre.
Devin Gannon and Eric Galbraith both had a pair of goals for Mount Royal, while Tyler Jewitt and Kevin Knopp both had singles and goalie Justin Cote made 26 saves in the win.
Tyler Henry,
Matt Sawa, and
Sanfred King replied for Regina.
Gannon's first goal came only a half minute into the contest, with Mike Brown and Jewitt drawing assists. Galbraith extended the lead to two with a goal 12 minutes in, then Knopp and Gannon scored twice in the span of 66 seconds late in the frame as the visitors took a 4-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Henry scored a power play goal to get the Cougars on the board early in the second, but Jewitt replied with a power play goal of his own less than six minutes later. Sawa then scored his first Canada West goal since Oct. 18, 2008 to get the Cougars back within three, but Galbraith's second of the contest came on the power play late in the second to send Mount Royal into the third with a 6-2 lead.
King scored Regina's third goal 11 minutes into the third but by then it was too little, too late for the U of R as the Cougars fall to 5-3-0 on the season.
Brown ended up with a four-assist night for Mount Royal, which improves to 2-6-0 and will play a home-and-home with Alberta next weekend.
The Cougars will have a weekend off before playing a home-and-home with Saskatchewan. The two teams will meet on Nov. 9 in Saskatoon and on Nov. 10 in Regina.
