The University of Regina's women's hockey team scored on three of its four power play opportunities in a 4-1 win over Mount Royal on Saturday night at the Flames Community Arena in Calgary.
The victory gives the Cougars a two-game weekend sweep over Canada West newcomer Mount Royal and improves the U of R's conference record to 5-3-0. The Cougars now sit in third place in the Canada West standings with 10 points.
Stephanie Sawchuk scored twice for the Cougars, while
Kendra Finch and
Rianne Wight both added singles. Wight also assisted on two goals, giving the fifth-year forward a three-point night.
Carleen Meszaros also had a pair of assists for the U of R, while Taralynn Suzuki was the lone Mount Royal player to beat Regina goalie
Toni Ross.
Despite Mount Royal enjoying a 12-5 shot advantage in the opening frame, it was the visitors that scored first. Finch broke in late in the first period and went high glove side on Mount Royal goalie Katie Sigurdson, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The power play then started clicking for the U of R.
With Suzuki off serving a tripping minor seven minutes into the second, Sawchuk skated out of the left corner and beat Sigurdson with a wrist shot to the stick side. Regina was given another power play just over two minutes later and 16 seconds after the penalty, Sawchuk struck again when the second-year forward scored from in tight to notch her third goal and ninth point of the young season.
Suzuki got Mount Royal on the board seven minutes into the third, but that was as close as Mount Royal would come. Wight added an empty netter - and the team's third power play goal of the game - with three seconds left to cap the scoring.
Ross ended up saving 24 of 25 shots in the victory for Regina. The second-year goalie has spectacular numbers this year, as she has a 3-1 record to go along with a 1.37 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage.
The Cougars will be back in action this weekend with a home-and-home against Saskatchewan (1-5-2). The teams will play at The Co-operators Centre in Regina on Friday night and in Saskatoon on Saturday.
