The University of Regina's women's hockey team opened up the 2012-13 Canada West schedule with a 4-0 road loss to the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Winter Sports Centre in Vancouver.
After a scoreless first period, UBC's Nicole Saxvik got the home side on the board with a goal just over two minutes into the second.
Saxvik's goal stood as the lone marker of the contest until early in the third, when Rebecca Unrau scored on the power play to extend UBC's lead to two. Tatiana Rafter and Unrau both added goals in the final 81 seconds of regulation, with Unrau's second of the game coming with an empty Regina net.
Making her debut in a UBC uniform, former Canadian national team goalie Danielle Dube stopped all 30 shots she faced to register a shutout.
Jennifer Schmidt got the start for the Cougars, stopping 25 of UBC's 28 shots. UBC was 1-for-2 on the power play, while the U of R was scoreless on its five opportunities with the man advantage.
The Cougars (0-1-0) and UBC (1-0-0) will face off again on Saturday night at the Doug Mitchell Winter Sports Centre.
