Rianne Wight (pictured) scored on all three of her attempts in the shootout to help give the University of Regina's women's hockey team a 3-2 win over UBC on Saturday night at the Doug Mitchell Winter Sports Centre in Vancouver.
After the two teams finished regulation tied at two and went through the twin five-minute overtimes scoreless, the shootout was needed to settle the outcome – and that's where Wight took over.
Wight scored in the second round to tie up the shootout after UBC's Tatiana Rafter scored on the Thunderbirds' first attempt, and Regina goalie
Toni Ross made saves on the next three UBC attempts.
Regina head coach
Sarah Hodges called on Wight again in the fifth round and the fifth-year forward scored again to give the Cougars the lead. That goal was answered by UBC's Christi Capozzi on the ensuing attempt, but Wight was marched back out there for her second consecutive attempt and scored for the third time in the shootout.
Ross saved Rafter's attempt in the sixth round to secure the victory for the Cougars, who improve their Canada West record to 1-1-0 with the win.
Katelyn Kennedy and
Hillary Lerat scored for the U of R in regulation, while Cailey Hay and Rebecca Unrau replied for UBC. The Cougars outshot UBC 41-36 and were 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Thunderbirds scored on one of their seven power play opportunities.
The Cougars host their Canada West home openers next Friday and Saturday night against Lethbridge.
