Men's hockey at home against top-ranked Alberta

11/15/2012 4:05:00 PM

Coming off a weekend which saw them take three out of a possible four points from then-No. 1 Saskatchewan in a home-and-home series, the University of Regina's men's hockey team will host the Alberta Golden Bears this weekend at the Co-operators Centre.

Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre on both Friday and Saturday.

It'll mark the second consecutive weekend that the Cougars will face the top-ranked team in the CIS, as Saskatchewan dropped to No. 3 in this week's rankings after the loss to the U of R and Alberta jumped up to No. 1.

Last Friday, the Cougars received a superlative 40-save performance from Andrew Hayes in the 2-1 overtime loss in Saskatoon.  The two teams played to a scoreless draw through two periods and after a Saskatchewan goal opened the scoring eight minutes into the third, Brayden Nargang came up with the game-tying goal with five minutes left to send it into overtime. Saturday's game saw the Cougars outshoot Saskatchewan 33-20 in a 2-1 home victory, with Matt Strueby opening the scoring late in the first and Ryan Dech's first career goal in the second period standing as the game winner.

Troy Hunter continues to lead the Cougars in scoring, collecting his 11th point of the season on Saturday with an assist on Dech's goal. Strueby and Tyler Henry both have 10 points, while Henry has a team-high six goals on the year. Dech ranks third among Canada West rookie defencemen with four points and also leads the Cougars with a +4 rating.

The Cougars continue to run with the platoon of Hayes and Lucas Gore in net. Both second-year goalies have 3-2 records and have started five Canada West games this season, and Gore has registered a 2.40 goals-against average to go with a sparkling .921 save percentage. Hayes isn't far behind in the save percentage department, as his .912 ranks fifth in the conference.

Alberta enters the weekend with five players ranked in the top six in the conference in scoring, led by second-year forward Jordan Hickmott who leads Canada West in both goals (10) and points (17). Johnny Lazo is tied with Hickmott with 17 points, while Sean Ringrose (14), Levko Koper (13), and defenceman Jesse Craige (13) also rank among the conference leaders.

The Golden Bears have also rolled with a platoon between the pipes, as Kurtis Mucha and Real Cyr have split the netminding duties in each of the last three weekends. Mucha has a 5-1 record and leads Canada West in both goals-against average (1.53) and save percentage (.926), while Cyr is 4-2 with a 2.21 goals-against average.

Alberta enters the weekend riding a six-game winning streak that started with a pair of wins over Lethbridge in late October and continued with two wins apiece over Mount Royal and Calgary. The Golden Bears have scored 39 goals in that six-game span.

After this weekend, the Cougars will have four consecutive road games to close out the pre-Christmas schedule. They'll have Manitoba next weekend and UBC on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
