The University of Regina's men's hockey team took No. 1-ranked Alberta to overtime on Friday night, but Kruise Reddick's power play goal early in the extra session gave the visiting Golden Bears a 3-2 win in Canada West action at The Co-operators Centre.

Rhett Rachinski and Jordan Hickmott also scored for Alberta, which erased a 2-0 second-period deficit to improve its Canada West-leading record to 10-3-0. Tyler Henry and Sanfred King both scored for the Cougars, while Andrew Hayes had a stellar 34-save effort between the pipes for the U of R and was named the game's first star.

Henry opened the scoring for the Cougars with six minutes left in the first period. Matt Strueby took a slap shot from the top of the circle which was saved by Alberta goalie Kurtis Mucha, but Henry collected the rebound and notched his team-leading seventh of the season. John Sonntag notched the second assist on Henry's goal.

The Cougars extended their lead to 2-0 after King finished off a cycle with a shot from the slot after taking a pass from Henry. Brayden Nargang also assisted on King's goal, his third of the Canada West schedule.

But Alberta had an answer late in the second period, as Rachinski scored on a rebound following a Jesse Ferguson point shot to get the visitors to within one going into the second intermission.

Alberta's most dangerous player got into the act in the third, as Jordan Hickmott scored his conference-leading 11th goal of the season on a snap shot from the right, tying the game at 2-2.

Strueby was whistled for a slashing penalty late in regulation which carried over into overtime, and the Cougars were just four seconds away from killing it off when Reddick notched the game winner after taking a feed from Jesse Craige and scoring on a one-timer from the right faceoff dot.

Alberta held a 37-20 advantage in shots and was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Cougars (6-3-2) were held scoreless on their only opportunity with the man advantage – which lasted just over a minute before an interference penalty took the Cougars off the power play.

Mucha made 18 saves for the Golden Bears in the win as the third-year goalie tallies his sixth victory of the season.

The two teams will meet again at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday night.
