The University of Alberta Golden Bears notched three goals in the first 13 minutes and cruised to a 5-2 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night in a Canada West men's hockey game at The Co-operators Centre.
Torrie Dyck scored a hat trick for Alberta, while Travis Toomey and Burke Gallimore each tallied singles and Real Cyr stopped 26 shots in the win for the Golden Bears.
Tyler Henry and
Liam Brennan scored for the Cougars, who move to 6-4-2 with the loss.
Dyck opened the scoring just shy of the six-minute mark for Alberta, scoring with an assist from Sean Ringrose. Toomey extended the lead to two just past the midpoint of the first period, and Gallimore's second of the season gave Alberta a quick 3-0 lead less than two minutes after Toomey's goal.
Henry got one back for the Cougars with a power play goal 30 seconds after Gallimore's goal, as Alberta's Jesse Craige was tagged with a hooking penalty almost immediately after Alberta took the three-goal lead. Henry's goal – his team-leading eighth of the season – came as Cyr was scrambling to get back into position after attempting to play a dump-in.
The score stayed 3-1 in favour of the No. 1-ranked Golden Bears until the latter stages of the second period, when Dyck scored two power play goals in under a minute to give Alberta a commanding 5-1 lead. Johnny Lazo and Craige assisted on Dyck's second of the contest, while Colin Joe and Ringrose drew assists on his hat trick goal.
Liam Brennan added a goal just 11 seconds before the second intermission, as his first of the season came following a burst through the Alberta defence.
That capped the scoring, though, as Regina outshot Alberta by a 12-8 margin in the third but neither team was able to bulge the twine in the final stanza.
Lucas Gore made 32 saves between the pipes for Regina, which will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games against Manitoba.
Alberta (11-3-0) now holds a four-point cushion atop the Canada West standings and will return home next Friday and Saturday for two games against UBC.
