Backstopped by a sterling performance from goalie
Jennifer Schmidt for the second consecutive night, the University of Regina's women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep over No. 3-ranked Alberta with a 2-1 win over the Pandas on Saturday in Edmonton.
Schmidt made 25 saves to help secure the U of R's first road sweep over the Pandas in program history, while
Carleen Meszaros and
Rianne Wight scored power play goals for the Cougars.
Monika Moskalski scored Alberta's lone goal just over a minute into the game, but that would be the only offence that the Pandas could muster. Moskalski beat Schmidt on a rebound with Hannah Mousek and Ali Campbell drawing the assists on the game's opening goal.
The Cougars replied before the halfway mark of the first period after Alberta was caught with too many players on the ice. Meszaros tipped
Paige Wheeler's slap pass from the point past Pandas goalie Michala Jeffries, with the second assist going to
Hillary Lerat.
The Cougars had a 7-6 edge in shots through one and Alberta had a 7-5 advantage in the second, but it was the visitors who came up with the breakthrough in the middle frame. With the Cougars on the man advantage for the third time in the contest, Wight popped her sixth goal of the season with helpers from
Kylie Gavelin and Wheeler to give the U of R a 2-1 lead with five minutes to go in the second.
Both teams fired 13 shots on net in the third, but neither team was able to score. Alberta applied some late pressure, but Schmidt was able to come up with a few key saves during goalmouth scrambles to keep the Cougars in front.
The Cougars (8-4-0) jump up to second place in the Canada West standings with the two wins. They'll now prepare for two consecutive home weekends, starting next weekend against Manitoba at The Co-operators Centre. They'll also host UBC on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 to close out the pre-Christmas schedule.
