Cougars push win streak to six with 84-64 win over Thompson Rivers

The University of Regina's women's basketball team now has six straight conference wins after an 84-64 victory over Thompson Rivers on Friday night in Kamloops, B.C.

The two teams weren't separated by more than five points for almost all of the opening three quarters, but the No. 3-ranked Cougars turned it on in the fourth. The Cougars piled up 27 points in the final frame and gave up only nine to pull away from Thompson Rivers late, at one point scoring 16 straight points over a span of just over three minutes midway through the fourth.

Michelle Clark was 9-for-15 from the field and led all players with 23 points, while Brittany Read scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in just 15 minutes on the floor. Danielle Schmidt scored 10 points and equalled a career high with 12 boards.

Jen Ju led Thompson Rivers with 20 points.

Turnovers plagued the Cougars in the first half, as they gave the ball away 17 times in the first two quarters. The U of R was better in that aspect in the second, turning it over only six times for a game total of 23. The Cougars shot 42% for the game and enjoyed a massive 58-36 rebounding advantage.

The Cougars (6-1) will travel to Kelowna for a Saturday game against UBC Okanagan (3-4). The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. PST and will be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.
