Cougars swept by Bisons in Winnipeg

The University of Regina's men's hockey team was defeated twice over the weekend by Manitoba, losing 6-0 on Friday night and 7-2 on Saturday afternoon to the Bisons at the Max Bell Arena in Winnipeg.

On Friday, the Cougars gave up goals to James Henry and Luke Cain in the opening four minutes and fell behind 3-0 going into the first intermission after a goal by Tyler Dittmer. Brandon Lockerby added another goal in the second period for Manitoba, and goals by Dylan Kelly and Matthew Lowry in the third sealed the win for the Bisons.

Lucas Gore got the start for the U of R and made 37 saves as the Cougars were outshot by a 43-22 margin during the contest. Jesse Deckert got the shutout for the Bisons.

Saturday's game looked like it was going to be a different story after Carter Selinger opened the scoring just past the one-minute mark of the first period, but Manitoba got goals from Henry and Brendan Rowinski to take a 2-1 lead after one.

Blair Macaulay scored a power play goal for the Bisons to extend their lead to 3-1, then blew the game wide open with three goals with three goals in less than four minutes in the second half of the middle standza. Henry added his second of the game, then Travis Bobbee and Jeremy Schappert scored power play goals to give Manitoba a 6-1 lead heading into the third.

Manitoba's Tyler Dittmer and Regina's Mark Schneider traded goals in the third period.

Deckert stopped 19 shots in the win for Manitoba, while Andrew Hayes got the start for the Cougars and made 32 stops.

The Cougars (6-6-2) hit the road again next weekend for a two-game road series at UBC.
