The University of Regina's women's basketball team improved to 7-1 after defeating UBC Okanagan by a 76-64 margin on Saturday night in Kelowna, B.C.
After the two teams were tied at the half, the Cougars used a big third quarter in which they outscored UBC Okanagan by a 22-9 margin to pull away. The Cougars clamped down on defence in the third, going on a 16-2 run in the final six minutes of the period.
The Cougars led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter before UBC Okanagan scored the game's final nine points to cut the eventual winning margin to 12.
Brittany Read (pictured) was 6-for-8 from the field, 6-for-6 from the line, and scored a team-high 18 points for the Cougars.
Michelle Clark added 15 points, while
Danielle Schmidt hit four of her six three-point attempts and ended up with 14.
Jennilea Coppola had a team-leading eight rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench as the Cougars win their seventh consecutive Canada West game.
Krystal Schouten scored a game-high 20 points for UBC Okanagan, while Emily Kanester scored 13 and added 11 rebounds to secure the game's lone double-double.
In second place in Canada West's Prairie Division, the Cougars return home next weekend to host a pair of Pacific Division opponents. They'll play Trinity Western (1-7) on Friday night before a Saturday night showdown against No. 2-ranked Fraser Valley (8-0).
