Paige Wheeler (pictured) had a three-point night as the University of Regina's women's hockey team won its fourth straight contest with a 4-2 victory over Manitoba on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Wheeler scored twice for the Cougars including the game-winning goal in the second, while
Rianne Wight and
Gina Campbell also scored and goalie
Toni Ross made 24 saves in the win. Kayleigh Wiens and Sara Barnabe both scored for Manitoba.
Winners of eight of their last nine Canada West games, the Cougars improve to 10-4-0 on the season. They're in sole possession of second place in the conference standings, three points behind first-place Calgary.
The Cougars opened the scoring near the five-minute mark of the first period when a shot by Wight from the top of the left faceoff circle beat Manitoba goalie Leitte Klassen to the glove side.
Krista Metz and Campbell drew the assists on Wight's goal, which may have deflected off a body in front before going in.
Hillary Lerat was whistled for a minor midway through the opening frame, but it was the Cougars that had the best scoring opportunity when
Stephanie Sawchuk was hauled down on a breakaway. Sawchuk was awarded a penalty shot, but ripped a wrist shot from the slot high on the attempt.
Kendra Finch had a chance for the Cougars with three minutes left in the first after deking to the backhand on a breakaway, but rung it off the far post. Campbell added to the lead less than two minutes after Finch's breakaway, deflecting an
Alexis Larson shot from the right point five-hole to send the Cougars into the first intermission up 2-0.
The Cougars scored early in the second after Campbell finished off a beautiful cross-ice pass from
Katelyn Kennedy, putting the home team up 3-0.
But just when it looked like the Cougars might run away with it, Manitoba scored twice in the span of five minutes midway through the second. Wiens scored just over a minute after Campbell's goal, and Barnabe forced a turnover at the Cougar blueline and scored on a breakaway to cut the Cougar lead to 3-2 going into the third.
Manitoba had a pair of power play opportunities in the third including on a bodychecking minor with just three minutes left, but the Cougars were able to successfully kill them off. Wheeler sealed the game with 24 seconds left with a lob from Manitoba's blue line over a defender and into the empty net.
Klassen ended up with 15 saves in the loss for Manitoba, which falls to 4-7-3 on the season. The Bisons were 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Cougars were held scoreless on their three opportunities with the man advantage.
The Cougars are back in action at The Co-operators Centre next weekend with a pair of games against UBC, while Manitoba travels to Edmonton for two games against the University of Alberta.
