Winners of four consecutive Canada West games and eight of its last nine, the University of Regina's women's hockey team hosts the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre.

The Cougars are coming off a home sweep over Manitoba, as Carleen Mezaros's overtime goal gave the U of R a 4-3 win on Friday night and the team followed that up with a 4-2 win over the Bisons on Saturday. The two wins improved Regina's record to 10-4-0 as the Cougars remain in sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings with 20 points at the midpoint of the conference schedule.

The team is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season, when the Cougars had a 10-3-1 record through their first 14 conference games.

Rianne Wight is tied for the Canada West lead with eight goals and the fifth-year forward needs just one more to tie Erin Tady for third on the U of R's all-time goals list. Wight also has seven assists, giving her a team-leading 15 points on the season. Paige Wheeler has also provided a good chunk of Regina's offence this season, as she's collected five goals and seven assists for 12 points this season.

Stephanie Sawchuk had five points last year in her rookie season, but already has 12 points this year as she's tied with Wheeler for second on the team in scoring. The team also has had the benefit of some major offensive contributions from the blue line, as Hillary Lerat has two goals and five assists this year and Meszaros has tallied three goals and three assists. U of R defencemen have combined for a total of eight goals this year, as rookie Alexis Larson also has a pair and Triston Riemer has one.

Both of the team's goalies have been excellent this season, as Toni Ross has a 5-1 record to go along with a 1.73 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage and Jennifer Schmidt is 5-3 with a 2.48 goals-against and a .916 save percentage.

UBC (7-4-3) enters the weekend in the thick of things in the Canada West standings, as the Thunderbirds' 17 points puts them in fourth place in the conference just one back of third-place Alberta and three back of the second-place Cougars.  The Thunderbirds are coming off of a home split with Alberta, as they tallied a 3-2 win on Friday before falling 2-1 to the Pandas on Saturday.

Second-year forward Rebecca Unrau comes into the weekend tied for the Canada West lead with eight goals and leading UBC with 12 points on the season, while Kaitlin Imai has 11 points and Tatiana Rafter has collected seven goals and three assists.

Former Canadian national team goalie Danielle Dube has started eight of UBC's 14 games this season, posting a 5-3 record and a 1.69 goals-against average while ranking second in the conference with a .944 save percentage.

These two teams have already met three times this season, including a two-game Canada West series in Vancouver in early October which saw the Cougars win 4-0 before UBC replied with a 3-2 shootout victory the next day. They also played a non-conference game in Regina in September, which the Cougars won by a 3-2 margin.
