The red-hot University of Regina's women's hockey team scored all three of its goals with the man advantage as the Cougars defeated the UBC Thunderbirds by a 3-1 score on Friday night in Canada West action at The Co-operators Centre.
Kylie Gavelin and defencemen
Laura Olsen and
Alexis Larson all scored for the Cougars, with goalie
Toni Ross making 17 saves while recording her sixth win of the season. Nikola Brown-John scored the lone goal of the contest for UBC.
The victory gives the Cougars (11-4-0) five consecutive wins and nine victories in their last 10 Canada West games.
Gavelin opened the scoring with six minutes left in the first period. Just nine seconds after UBC's Kelsey Halvorson was whistled for a contact minor,
Rianne Wight found
Carleen Meszaros on a back door pass. Meszaros's shot was saved by UBC goalie Samantha Langford, but Gavelin potted the rebound on the ensuing scramble to notch her third goal of the season.
Olsen added to the lead early in the second, scoring the first of her career and what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. With the Cougars on another power play, the third-year defenceman intercepted a clearing attempt and walked into the slot, where she beat Langford just a minute and a half into the middle stanza.
Larson increased Regina's lead to three goals exactly six minutes later, scoring on a shot from the point to notch the team's third consecutive power play goal. Olsen added a helper on Larson's goal to end up with a two-point night.
Brown-John added a goal for UBC (7-5-3) just past the halfway mark of the third period to break up Ross's shutout bid, but that was as close as the Thunderbirds would come.
Regina was 3-for-9 with the power play and UBC ended up 0-for-9 with the man advantage as the game was marred by a total of 19 minor penalties. The Cougars outshot the Thunderbirds by a 28-18 margin in the win.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
