The No. 5-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears continued their strong season with a 6-2 victory over the host Regina Cougars on Friday night at The Co-operators Centre.

The Golden Bears improved their regular season record to 17-6-2, tying them for first in Canada West. The Cougars (5-18-2) remain five points back of Lethbridge for the sixth and final conference playoff spot with just three games left on the schedule.

Alberta showed a dominating scoring attack as six different players scored for the Golden Bears. The U of A was led by third-year forward Sean Ringrose, who scored his 10th goal of the campaign early in the second on what proved to be the game-winning goal.

A pair of point shots by Jordan Rowley and Greg Gardner evaded Cougar goalie Lucas Gore in the first period to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead.

Ringrose's goal five minutes into the third increased Alberta's lead to 3-0 on a gorgeous backhand effort. Less than a minute later, Zack Dailey intercepted an outlet pass in the Cougar zone and went bar down to put his team up 4-0.

Terrance DeLaronde got the Cougars on the scoreboard with just under seven minutes left in the second after grabbing a rebound in front of Alberta goalie Real Cyr, but that was as close as the Cougars would come.

Regina successfully killed off a lengthy 5-on-3 early in the third, but James Dobrowolski's goal after the penalties expired snuffed any momentum that the Cougars hoped to generate from the kill. Johnny Lazo pounced on a rebound three minutes later to put the visitors up 6-1.

Tyler Penny added a power play goal for the Cougars after deflecting a Mark Schneider point shot.

Cyr made 12 saves to register his 12th victory of the season, while Gore stopped 37 of 43 shots.

These two teams will meet again tomorrow night at The Co-operators Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
