Gina Campbell had a three-point night and
Jennifer Schmidt had a 23-save shutout as the University of Regina's women's hockey team recorded a 5-0 shutout road win over Lethbridge on Friday night.
Kendra Finch scored a pair and
Hillary Lerat,
Kaitlin Sherven, and
Rianne Wight also tallied goals for the Cougars, who improve to 7-13-1 with the victory.
Lerat opened the scoring midway through the first period on the power play after her shot went five-hole on Lethbridge goalie Crystal Patterson. That was shortly followed by Sherven's goal, as the third-year forward corralled a loose puck following a goalmouth scramble and scored her second of the season.
The score stayed 2-0 until the late stages of the third period when Wight was sent in on a breakaway and went five-hole on Patterson, notching her seventh of the campaign. Finch scored with just three seconds left in the second after taking a pass from Sherven on a two-on-one, and notched another goal less than two minutes into the third to secure her first Canada West multiple-goal game and essentially seal the win for the Cougars.
Schmidt's shutout is her second of the season, as the rookie goaltender also blanked UBC in Vancouver back on Oct. 29. Campbell now has six points in her last four games, as she also had a three-point night three weekends ago against UBC.
Patterson, who ended up with 19 saves, was pulled in favour of Shauntelle Parsons following the second period. Parsons stopped five of Regina's six shots in the third.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Lethbridge.
