Box Score The University of Regina's women's hockey team was seven seconds away from registering a weekend road sweep over Lethbridge, but gave up a late third-period goal and lost 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night.
With the Cougars clinging to a 2-1 lead, Lethbridge pulled goalie Crystal Patterson and the Pronghorns sent the game into overtime after Sadie Lenstra took a pass from Shelby Ballendine and scored with just 7.4 seconds left on the clock.
In the shootout, Amy Van Buskirk scored in the first round for Lethbridge before
Rianne Wight scored for the Cougars in the second. After
Brooklyn Moskowy was stopped by Patterson in the third round, Ballendine beat Regina goalie
Lisa Urban with a backhand deke to give Lethbridge the victory.
Jenna-Marie Durnin opened the scoring for Lethbridge seven minutes into the second period following a scoreless opening 20 minutes.
The Cougars replied less than a half minute later when Wight scored her eighth of the season on an unassisted effort after the fourth-year forward grabbed a loose puck and went high blocker side on Patterson to tie the score at 1-1. Moskowy gave Regina the 2-1 lead late in the second after pouncing on a rebound following a goalmouth scramble, notching her sixth of the campaign.
Wight also assisted on Moskowy's goal, giving her a two-point night.
Regina was 0-for-2 on the power play, while Lethbridge was 0-for-3.
The Cougars (7-13-2) finish off their 2011-12 schedule this weekend with a pair of afternoon affairs at home against Alberta. The teams will face off at 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at The Co-operators Centre.
