The University of Regina's women's basketball team won the CIS West Regional and earned an automatic berth to next weekend's 2012 CIS Championship in Calgary after defeating Brock by a score of 85-62 on Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex at the University of Saskatchewan.
Carly Graham was 4-for-7 from downtown and led the Cougars with 17 points, while
Joanna Zalesiak and
Michelle Clark both added 16 for the U of R.
Danielle Schmidt had nine points and led all players with 12 rebounds, with Zalesiak adding seven assists for the Cougars.
Nicole Rosenkranz led Brock with 14 points.
The two teams traded leads three times in the first quarter before the Cougars finished the opening 10 minutes with three straight buckets, including two by Zalesiak as the U of R led by seven going into the second. The Cougars continued that momentum in the second quarter, going on a 10-2 run to open up a healthy 15-point lead.
After going into the third quarter with a 19-point lead, the Cougars put away any hopes of a Brock comeback with a 12-2 run that gave them a 29-point advantage.
"I thought we came out and played very well, especially early on," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "We did a great job defensively and limited them to a low shooting percentage, which really allowed us to get out and run. We achieved all the goals we set out for ourselves this weekend."
The Cougars ended up shooting 45.5% from the field during the game compared to 27.5% for Brock. Led by Graham's performance from the perimeter, the U of R was 9-for-20 as a team from three-point land while Brock was 5-for-23.
Seedings and first-round matchups for the 2012 CIS Championships will be announced by the CIS on Sunday.
NOTES: The U of R's victory avenges one of the Cougars' two losses this season, as Brock scored a 65-56 non-conference win over Regina back in October ... the Cougars now have a 35-2 overall record this year.
