Craig Cuthbert scored in the eighth round of the shootout and Andrew Hayes (pictured) stopped all eight UBC attempts as the University of Regina's men's hockey team took a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Thunderbirds on Saturday night in Canada West action at The Co-operators Centre.

Despite the lengthy shootout, Cuthbert's goal was the only successful attempt. Hayes was perfect in the shootout, but UBC goaltender Jordan White also stopped all seven Regina shots before Cuthbert picked the top corner over his glove side to put the Cougars in the lead.

Regina (1-1-0) got a pair of goals from Troy Hunter and singles from Tyler Henry and Matt Strueby in regulation, while Nate Fleming, Cole Wilson, Brad Hoban, and Wyatt Hamilton all scored for UBC (1-0-1).

Hunter also assisted on Regina's two other goals, giving the second-year right winger a four-point night. In addition to doing his heroics in the shootout, Hayes also stopped 37 of UBC's 41 shots in regulation and overtime.

White made 29 saves for UBC, which will return to action on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 on the road at Calgary.

The Cougars will travel for a pair of non-conference games against NCAA Div. I opponents next weekend, as they'll square off against Alaska Fairbanks on Friday and Alaska Anchorage on Saturday. The U of R continues Canada West play on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 at Lethbridge.

NOTES: Hunter's goal in the first period – which was scored when he came in on the right wing and fired a laser to the top shelf – was his first CIS goal.
