Box Score

The University of Regina's women's basketball team opened the second half of the Canada West schedule with a convincing 95-47 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Fifth-year post Brittany Read dominated for the Cougars, tying for the team lead with 15 points and matching her career high with 17 rebounds in the win. Lindsay Ledingham and Danielle Schmidt also scored 15, while Michelle Clark added 14. Jennilea Coppola came off the bench to score 10 points and fell just one rebound short of a double-double.

Kady Dandeneau was 7-for-15 from the field for UNBC and led all players with 17 points. Mercedes Van Koughnett, who came into the game as UNBC's leading scorer and rebounder, was plagued by foul trouble all game long and was limited to two points and two rebounds in just 18 minutes on the floor.

The Cougars took control of the contest with 12 consecutive points in the opening minutes and never looked back, outscoring UNBC 31-7 in a first quarter which saw the U of R shoot just a shade under 60% as a team.

The rest of the game was much the same, with the Cougars taking a 30-point advantage into halftime and adding to the lead throughout the second half. The U of R ended up shooting 46% from the field, while UNBC ended up shooting 29% for the game.

The Cougars (10-1) also had a massive edge in rebounds, pulling down 68 during the game to match the school's highest single-game total since joining Canada West prior to the 2001-02 season. UNBC was limited to just 25 rebounds, with the Cougars holding a 28-3 edge in second-chance points. The U of R's inside dominance was also reflected in points in the paint, as the Cougars held a 54-20 advantage there.

UNBC falls to 3-8 on the season and will make the short trip east to play winless Brandon (0-11) on Saturday, while Regina will host Mount Royal (3-8) on Saturday night at the CKHS. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
