The Calgary Dinos got two goals from Hayley Wickenheiser in the game's 90 seconds and never looked back, defeating the Regina Cougars 6-1 on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre to earn a weekend women's hockey sweep.
Wickenheiser added another goal in the second to complete the hat trick, while Erika Mitschke scored twice and Sinead Tracey scored the other for the Dinos. Amanda Tapp stopped 23 of Regina's 24 shots in the victory.
Paige Wheeler's eighth of the season stood as the lone goal for the Cougars.
Wickenheiser scored the first goal of the contest just 56 seconds in, scoring with help from Tanya Morgan and Jenna Smith. It was the same scoring play just 26 seconds later, with Wickenheiser beating Cougar starter
Toni Ross and Morgan and Smith drawing the assists on what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
Mitschke's first of the game came on the power play midway through the opening period, a goal which chased Ross in favour of backup
Jennifer Schmidt. The Cougars held a 10-8 advantage in shots in the first, as it was an eerily similar opening period to Friday – which also saw Calgary score three times in the opening 20 minutes despite being outshot.
Mitschke scored her second power play goal of the game early in the second after an early tripping call on Regina, and Wickenheiser completed the hat trick with a goal just over two minutes later.
Tracey capped the scoring for the Dinos just past the eight-minute mark of the second period with Calgary's third power play goal of the game. The visitors ended up 3-for-8 with the man advantage, while the Cougars were 1-for-7.
Wheeler's goal was all the offence the Cougars could muster, with
Rianne Wight drawing the lone assist on the play to move into sole possession of fifth on the U of R's all-time points list.
The Cougars drop to 13-7-0 on the season and fall to third place in the Canada West standings after Alberta took three out of a possible four points from Saskatchewan this weekend. The U of R is back at home next weekend with a pair of games against Mount Royal (6-12-2) at The Co-operators Centre.
Now six points clear of the second-place Pandas, Calgary (16-3-1) hosts Manitoba next weekend.
