The University of Regina's women's hockey team is at home for the second consecutive weekend, as the Cougars host Mount Royal on Friday and Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Both games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
The Cougars are looking to put the brakes on a three-game skid that includes a pair of losses to No. 2-ranked Calgary last weekend in Regina. Despite the recent hiccup – which follows a string in which the U of R won 11 out of 12 conference games – the Cougars are still ranked No. 10 in the CIS and are in third place in the Canada West standings, just one point behind second-place Alberta.
“We've gotten away from a few of the things that made us so successful earlier in the season,” Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. “Turnovers have caused a significant majority of the goals we've given up lately, so our puck management needs to be better overall. We just need to have a consistent work ethic, shoot when we get opportunities to do so, and drive hard to the net and we're going to be okay.”
Paige Wheeler enters the weekend on a three-game point streak and has 12 points in her last 10 games. Wheeler – who has never missed a Canada West game in her five-year career at the U of R – is fifth on the school's all-time list in career goals (42) and eighth in career points (82).
Also moving up the school's career charts is
Rianne Wight, who – like Wheeler – has played in all 116 of the U of R's Canada West games since joining the team prior to the 2008-09 season. Wight comes into the Mount Royal series with 47 career goals, just one shy of Erin Tady for third on the school's all-time list. She's also collected 89 points in her career, which puts her two behind current assistant coach Julie Foster for No. 4 on the career charts.
Wight and Wheeler are the team's top two scorers, as both players are tied for the team lead with eight goals. Wight has added a team-high 12 assists for 20 points, while Wheeler also has eight helpers for 16 points.
Carleen Meszaros leads the team's blueliners with nine points in 20 games played.
After a Lethbridge series where
Toni Ross was unavailable so
Jennifer Schmidt got both starts between the pipes against the Pronghorns, both goalies got starts last weekend against Calgary. Look for Hodges to continue to split the netminding duties among the two second-year goaltenders this weekend against Mount Royal.
Mount Royal (6-12-2) comes into the weekend series in eighth place in the Canada West standings. Despite being on an eight-game losing streak, Mount Royal is just four points back of Saskatchewan for the sixth and final playoff berth with eight games left on the conference schedule.
Fifth-year forward Chrissy Hodgson is Mount Royal's most dangerous player, as she leads the Cougars with nine goals and 17 points. The team has split the goaltending duties between Kendall Kilgour and Jess Ross over the two weekends since the Canada West schedule resumed.
These two teams met during the conference schedule for the first time in late October, with Regina taking 5-2 and 4-1 victories over Mount Royal in Calgary.
The U of R will have six games remaining on the Canada West slate after this weekend. The Cougars will take on Saskatchewan in a home-and-home, host Alberta twice at home in a series that might very well decide second place in the conference standings, and finish off the Canada West schedule with a pair of road games against Manitoba.
