Brittany Read's big double-double led the University of Regina's women's basketball team to a 63-53 road win over No. 5-ranked UBC on Saturday night in Vancouver.
Read ended up with 17 points and 13 rebounds, leading the team in both categories and collecting her fifth double-double of the conference schedule.
Megan Chamberlin had another strong game off the bench for the Cougars with 10 points in 15 minutes, while
Michelle Clark pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds in the win.
The win improves the U of R's conference record to 11-2 as the Cougars remain tied with Calgary for first place in the Prairie Division standings.
UBC opened up an early five-point lead in the first quarter, but the Cougars went on a run of their own to take the lead and opened up as much as a 10-point advantage in the second quarter. UBC scored the last seven points of the half to get to within two, but both offences dried up as neither team was able to score in the last three minutes of the second.
The third quarter saw UBC start strong and lead by as many as six points, but the Cougars seized control of the contest with a big 16-3 run and led by seven going into the fourth. The Thunderbirds pulled to within three points on two occasions in the fourth, but the Cougars restored order with an 8-0 run to build up a double-digit advantage and held off UBC down the stretch for the win.
Kris Young led UBC (10-4) with 18 points, while Cassandra Knievel scored 10 and Leigh Stansfield added nine for the Thunderbirds.
The Cougars return home next weekend to host Alberta on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Game time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on both nights.
