The University of Regina's women's hockey team moved into a tie for second place in the Canada West standings after a 4-2 road win over Saskatchewan on Friday night in Saskatoon.
Paige Wheeler,
Rianne Wight,
Gina Campbell, and
Stephanie Sawchuk all scored for the Cougars, while
Toni Ross made 18 saves as the U of R improves its Canada West record to 15-7-1 with the victory. The Cougars are now tied with Alberta in the conference standings after the Pandas were defeated by Calgary on Friday night.
Amber Broker and Cara Wooster replied for Saskatchewan (8-11-4).
Broker's goal opened the scoring with six minutes left in the first period, but Wheeler replied four minutes later. She picked up a loose puck in the slot, walked in, and beat Saskatchewan goalie Cassidy Hendricks with a low wrist shot to score the first of what would turn out to be three consecutive unassisted goals for the Cougars.
Wight forced a turnover in the neutral zone and broke in on a 2-on-1 just past the five-minute mark of the second, but kept the puck and beat Hendricks over the shoulder to give the Cougars the lead. Despite an 11-4 shot advantage for the U of R in the second, Wight's goal was the only scoring of the middle frame.
Campbell extended the lead to two six minutes into the third, intercepting a weak clearing attempt and scoring with a shot from the top of the slot.
Wooster's power play goal with seven minutes left made things interesting, but Sawchuk's empty netter with 45 seconds left sealed the win.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Regina (7:00).
