The University of Regina's men's hockey team lost in double overtime to Saskatchewan on Saturday night at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, but ended up with three out of a possible four points against the No. 5-ranked Huskies during the weekend home-and-home.

The overtime loss comes 24 hours after the Cougars had scored a come-from-behind 5-4 shootout win over the Huskies on Friday night in Regina.

On Saturday, it was Saskatchewan's turn to erase a third-period deficit as the Cougars led 3-1 until the Huskies got goals from Derek Hulak, Brandon Herrod, and Kyle Bortis in the span of 3:04 to take a 4-3 lead.

Brock Appleyard's goal with just over a minute remaining sent the game into overtime, where Andrew Bailey scored the game-winning goal on the power play with 44 seconds left in the second extra session. Appleyard also scored in the second period, while Tyler Penny and James Friedel notched the other University of Regina goals. Matthew Spafford scored Saskatchewan's other goal in the win.

Penny opened the scoring five minutes into the first period shortly after a Spafford roughing minor gave the Cougars a 5-on-4 advantage. Troy Hunter and Craig Cuthbert drew the assists on Penny's goal, which came on a shot to the five hole following a Hunter feed.

Saskatchewan's Spafford replied less than three minutes later to tie it up at 1-1, but Friedel scored his third of the season after jumping in on an odd-man rush and scoring on a rebound following a Ryan Sawka shot. That gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Despite the Cougars enjoying a 15-7 advantage in shots in the middle frame, the only goal of the second was Appleyard's first of the game. With a delayed penalty coming up to the Huskies, Sanfred King stepped by a Saskatchewan defender with a toe drag and attempted a cross-crease pass that was intended for Tyler Murray but was blocked. Appleyard had two hacks at the loose puck and connected with the second to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.

In the third period, Saskatchewan's Hulak beat Cougar goalie Andrew Hayes from just inside the left faceoff circle near the 12-minute mark to get the home side to within one. Herrod tied it up at 3-3 after scoring on a cross-crease feed from Jimmy Bubnick, and Bortis went over the shoulder of Hayes from in tight just over a minute after Herrod's goal to put the Huskies up 4-3.

Saskatchewan's lead lasted until with just over a minute left, when the puck was jarred loose to Appleyard following a scrum along the side wall. Appleyard stepped into a slap shot from just inside the blue line and beat Saskatchewan goalie Ryan Holfeld to tie it up at 4-4.

After a scoreless first overtime, Carter Selinger was whistled for a holding minor two minutes into the second extra period. That gave Saskatchewan a 4-on-3 advantage, and the Huskies won it just six seconds before Selinger's penalty was to expire. Zak Stebner found Bailey with a pass to the slot, and Bailey redirected it past Hayes for the winner.

Hayes and Holfeld were kept busy throughout, as both teams registered 44 shots during the game. Regina ended up 1-for-4 on the power play, while Saskatchewan was 2-for-6.

The Cougars move to 12-9-3 after the three-point weekend, but remain close to both fifth-place UBC (13-8-3) and fourth-place Calgary (15-9-0) in the Canada West standings. The U of R hits the road next weekend to face No. 1-ranked Alberta on Friday and Saturday.
