Second-year goalie
Lucas Gore made 24 saves in the win for the Cougars.
Selinger opened the scoring near the midway mark of the first period with the Cougars on the power play. Penny and fifth-year defenceman
Russ Nielsen both assisted on Selinger's goal, which came after the third-year forward tapped in a rebound from in tight. Henry notched his team-leading ninth of the season late in the first to give the Cougars a two-goal advantage heading into the first intermission.
Penny's second of the year gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead just past the three-minute mark of the second, but Lethbridge struck twice in the span of 1:12 to get back to within one. Both goals came off the stick of Schaber, who collected his seventh and eighth goals of the season as he continues his fine rookie season for the Pronghorns.
Playing in his first game back after missing five contests due to injury, Hunter pounced on a rebound and scored with seven minutes left in the second to put the Cougars up 4-2. The U of R dominated the shot tally in the first 40 minutes, holding a 31-11 advantage through two periods.
Kyle McLachlan scored for Lethbridge 2:38 into the third to pull the Pronghorns to within one, but that would be as close as the visitors would come. Selinger finished off a nice play by Cuthbert with a shot to the top shelf from the slot to restore the Cougars' two-goal lead, and Penny's nice deflection with a minute and a half left clinched the win for the U of R.
Dylan Tait got the start between the pipes for Lethbridge (1-14-2) and made 27 saves on 31 shots. Damien Ketlo came in for the third and allowed two goals on 13 shots.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
NOTES: Selinger set career highs in both goals (2) and points (3) … Penny's three points and Cuthbert's three assists were also career highs … the Cougars (8-7-2) move to within one point of fifth-place UBC with the victory.
