Carleen Meszaros and
Stephanie Sawchuk both scored for the University of Regina's women's hockey team as the Cougars edged Lethbridge 2-1 on Friday night at the Nicholas Sheran Arena in Lethbridge.
Second-year goalie
Jennifer Schmidt got the start between the pipes and made 21 saves for the Cougars, who now have seven consecutive victories and hold the second longest winning streak in the nation behind McGill (11).
The Cougars got on the scoreboard early in the first shortly after Lethbridge was whistled for a hooking penalty. Meszaros went top shelf on a shot from the slot, scoring with helpers from
Rianne Wight and
Kylie Gavelin to collect her fourth goal of the season. Sawchuk extended the lead under four minutes later after grabbing her own rebound and sending a second effort over Lethbridge goalie Crystal Patterson's blocker, notching what would turn out to be the game-winning goal.
After a scoreless middle stanza, Lethbridge spoiled Schmidt's shutout bid just past the two-minute mark of the third period. Breanna Frasca corralled a loose rebound and lifted it over Schmidt, getting the Pronghorns to within one. But that would be the only offence that the Pronghorns could muster in the third period despite enjoying an 11-3 shot advantage in the final 20 minutes.
The victory improves Regina's record to 13-4-0 on the season as the second-place Cougars keep pace with first-place Calgary and third-place Alberta, who also recorded victories on Friday.
Lethbridge drops to 5-9-3 on the season.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Lethbridge in a game that can be seen live at
