Brock Appleyard's first career goal stood as the game winner as the University of Regina's men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep with a 4-2 win over Lethbridge on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.

Appleyard's goal broke a 2-2 deadlock just a minute and 33 seconds after Lethbridge's Ryan Letts had tied it up with four minutes left in regulation. For good measure, Appleyard added an insurance marker just over a minute later to put the game away. Tyler Penny and Russ Nielsen also scored for Regina, while Daniel Iwanski scored the Pronghorns' other goal.

Andrew Hayes got the start for the Cougars and stopped 24 of 26 shots to collect his second win in as many starts.

"After having a month off, I was extremely impressed with the way we played this weekend," Cougars first-year head coach Todd Johnson said. "It was a full team effort tonight and all 20 guys played extremely hard in the win."

Iwanski got Lethbridge on the board with seven minutes left in the first period. Cody Chikie's shot from the top of the circle was saved by Hayes, but Iwanski pounced on the rebound and banged him his fourth of the season. Iwanski's goal was the only one of the opening frame, which saw the Cougars outshoot the Pronghorns by a 21-11 margin.

Penny tied up the game for the Cougars three minutes into the second, scoring with assists from Carter Selinger and Mark Schneider. The middle frame again saw the Cougars enjoy a big advantage in shots, registering 18 to Lethbridge's seven.

The Cougars got their first lead of the game shortly after Lethbridge's Tim Campbell was assessed a tripping minor midway through the third. Team captain Russ Nielsen scored his first of the season, with Penny and Schneider both registering assists on the goal.

Letts tied up the game with a nice goal off a deflection with 4:09 left and with Lethbridge on a power play, but the deadlock lasted just a minute and a half before Appleyard took over.

The second-year forward intercepted a clearing attempt, drove wide, and fired bar down to give the Cougars the lead for good with two and a half minutes left. He wasn't done there, as Appleyard added his second of the game on his next shift to clinch the win. Tyler Murray and John Sonntag both assisted on Appleyard's second goal.

The Cougars ended up outshooting Lethbridge 53-26 during the game, as Pronghorns goalie Damien Ketlo made 49 saves in the loss and was named the game's second star.

Regina (9-7-2) wins its third straight games and have four consecutive road games upcoming on the Canada West schedule, beginning with a pair against Calgary next weekend.

Lethbridge (1-15-2) will host UBC next Friday and Saturday.
