The University of Regina's men's hockey team is back at home for the second consecutive weekend, as the Cougars host Lethbridge on Friday and Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
Both games have a scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m.
The Cougars opened the season last weekend against a University of Calgary squad that was ranked fourth on Tuesday in the first CIS Top Ten of the season. The Dinos took both ends of the two-game series, winning 5-2 on Friday night and 4-1 on Saturday.
The line of team captain
Craig Cuthbert between
Brock Appleyard and rookie
Christian Magnus provided all of the offence for the Cougars in the team's two games last weekend. Appleyard scored both of the U of R's goals on Friday night, including one on a deflection in the first period that was originally credited to rookie defenceman
Brody Luhning. Luhning, who comes to the U of R after three full years with the Battlefords North Stars, collected assists in both of his first two Canada West games.
Second-year head coach
Todd Johnson expects to see
Lucas Gore and
Andrew Hayes platoon in net once again this season, and both third-year goalies got a start against Calgary. Gore got the call on Friday night, while Hayes made his first start of the season on Saturday.
This weekend will mark the first meaningful games of the season for Lethbridge, as the Pronghorns travelled south for a pair of games against NCAA opponents last weekend while six of the other seven Canada West teams kicked off the conference schedule. Lethbridge lost 5-1 to Minnesota last Saturday before falling 7-1 to Minnesota State on Sunday.
Lethbridge, which was 0-3-0 against CIS competition in non-conference action including a 4-3 setback to the U of R back on Sept. 14 in Regina, returns 15 players from last season's team that went 2-22-4 in Canada West play. The Pronghorns' top returning forward is Cass Mappin, while head coach Greg Gatto expects the addition of Mitchell Maxwell (Lethbridge Hurricanes), Ryon Moser (Swift Current Broncos), and Guillaume Naud (Dauphin Kings) to bolster the team's offence.
Defenceman David McMullen piled up 15 points as a rookie last season, while Corbin Karl transfers to Lethbridge following a season in the NCAA with Alaska Anchorage. Goaltenders Damien Ketlo and Dylan Tait both return for the Pronghorns, who will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home against Calgary.
The Cougars will prepare for their first road trip of the Canada West schedule next weekend, as they'll fly out to the West Coast for a pair of games against UBC.
Both of this weekend's games will be webcast live at

NOTES: Regina enters the weekend with a 62-43-7 advantage in the 112 Canada West games played between the two teams ... the Cougars took all four meetings against Lethbridge last season and have won six of the last seven over the Pronghorns.
