The University of Regina Cougars picked up their first win of the season on Friday night, defeating the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 6-0 in Canada West men's hockey action.

The Cougars' offence was on the attack all night, scoring four times in the second period alone. Tyler Henry, Troy Hunter, Carter Selinger, Mark Schneider, Brayden Nargang, and Craig Cuthbert all found the back of the net for Regina. Meanwhile Andrew Hayes got the shutout in net, stopping all 20 shots that came his way.

Henry opened the scoring just over three minutes into the first, beating Lethbridge goaltender Dylan Tait on a wraparound for his first goal of the season. While the Pronghorns managed to hold off the Cougars for the remainder of the period, Regina continued to pressure into the second and scored four unanswered goals.

Hunter put one in just under the crossbar, before Selinger and Schneider scored a minute apart with the latter coming on the power play.

That would spell the end of the night for Tait, who was replaced in the Pronghorns net by Alex Sirard. However, with five minutes remaining in the period, Brayden Nargang was sent in on a breakaway by Sanfred King and found the back of the net to put the Cougars up by five. Captain Craig Cuthbert would add one final marker for the Cougars halfway through the third, also his first of the season.

Tempers began to flare late in the game, with Cougars rookie Austin Bourhis and the Pronghorns' Cason Machacek each receiving five minute majors and game misconducts for fighting. Sirard made 16 saves for the Lethbridge in the final period but the Pronghorn's offence could not solve Hayes, as the Cougars took the first game of the weekend series.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at The Co-operators Centre. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
