The No. 5-ranked University of Regina's women's hockey team regained the lead early in the third period on a Kendra Finch goal and put the game away with a late flurry en route to a 5-1 road win over Lethbridge on Friday night.

Kylie Gavelin, Tori Head, Kaitlin Sherven, and Stephanie Sawchuk also scored for the Cougars, who now have three consecutive Canada West victories to open up the season. Goalie Jennifer Schmidt stopped 34 of 35 shots for the U of R.

Gavelin opened the scoring midway through the first period after gaining control of the puck at the right faceoff dot in the offensive zone. She got a shot off, collected her own rebound, and jammed it home to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead that would stand until the third period.

The Cougars gave up a shorthanded goal just shy of the four-minute mark in the third period as Sarah Spence tied up the game with teammate Kirsten Reeves in the box serving a tripping minor.

But Finch scored less than two minutes later off a goalmouth scramble, notching her second of the season and what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. The game stayed a one-goal affair until the final minutes of the third, when Head, Sherven, and Sawchuk all scored in a span of just 68 seconds to give the Cougars a four-goal margin of victory.

The lone undefeated team remaining in Canada West, the Cougars will finish off the two-game series against Lethbridge on Saturday night.
