Box Score
Skyler Hladun scored what would prove to be the game winning goal late in the second period as the University of Regina Cougars men's hockey team skated past the Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-1 on Saturday night.
John Sonntag,
Christian Magnus, and
Carter Selinger also found the back of the net for the Cougars, while Tim Campbell tallied the lone marker for Lethbridge.
Lucas Gore (pictured) made 26 saves for his first win of the season, while Lethbridge goaltender Dylan Tait took the loss in net for the Pronghorns.
Sonntag scored the only goal of the first period on the power play, with the Pronghorns' Corbin Karl in the box for hooking. While the Cougars had the lead after one, the Pronghorns were ahead in the shot department, 12-7.
The second period proved once again to be the most productive for the Cougars. After killing off a pair of early penalties,
Skyler Hladun picked up a loose rebound in the slot to score his first as a Cougar. Less than two minutes later, rookie
Christian Magnus found the back of the net to put the Cougars up 3-0.
The Pronghorns came out strong to start the third, and their persistence paid off with a power play goal off the stick of Tim Campbell. However, the Cougars continued to shower the Lethbridge net with shots, and three minutes later
Carter Selinger blasted one past Tait to seal the win for the Cougars.
With the win, the Cougars even their record to 2-2-0. They will hit the road for the first time this year next weekend when they travel to UBC for games on Friday and Saturday night. The Thunderbirds dropped both games of their season-opening series this weekend to Calgary.
Meanwhile, the Pronghorns will head home 0-2-0 and will look for their first win of the year next week against Calgary, who will roll into town with a perfect 4-0-0 record.
