The University of Regina's women's hockey team will put its perfect record on the line this weekend as the No. 5-ranked Cougars play host to the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday night.
The Cougars have a 4-0-0 record in conference play this season, with all four of those wins coming on the road. They opened the Canada West schedule with a sweep over the Calgary Dinos by scores of 2-1 and 3-1, and followed that up with a trip to Lethbridge where they came away with 5-1 and 2-1 wins over the Pronghorns.
Second-year forward
Meghan Sherven has been outstanding for the Cougars in the early stages of the season. She scored her first career goal in the opening game of the year, and has added three more since. She also took home Canada West Second Star of the Week honours last week. The Cougars have also received solid play from
Stephanie Sawchuk, netting two goals and an assist in four games. Meanwhile,
Kylee Kupper is third in league scoring among rookies with three assists.
Toni Ross and
Jennifer Schmidt have split the netminding duties for the Cougars, with each goalie surrendering only two goals so far this season.
The Thunderbirds come into town with a 2-1-1 record, trailing the first-place Cougars by three points in the Canada West standings. UBC is coming off a pair of games against Calgary which saw the Thunderbirds split the series against the Dinos as they skated to a 4-0 victory on Friday before falling 4-3 in a shootout on Saturday. UBC has seen strong play from fourth-year blueliner Sarah Casorso, who has a goal and seven assists over four games to lead both the team and the league in points. Forward Tatiana Rafter is also off to a good start, finding the back of the net four times and adding two assists.
This will mark the first time that the U of R and UBC have met since last year's Canada West semifinals in Regina, which saw the Cougars win Game 1 before the Thunderbirds claimed Game 2 and Game 3 wins to take the series. Overall, the Cougars come into the weekend with an all-time record of 37-9-1 against UBC in the 47 conference games between the two teams.
The Cougars and Thunderbirds face off at The Co-operators Centre at 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Both games will be webcast live at
