The University of Regina women's hockey team improved to 5-0-0 on the season as they downed the UBC Thunderbirds 2-0 at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.

Kristin Boan scored her first career CIS goal midway through the first, and Brooklyn Moskowy added another in the third for the Cougars. Jennifer Schmidt stopped 41 shots for her first shutout of the season, while UBC's Samantha Langford took the loss between the pipes for the Thunderbirds.

After both teams failed to convert on early power play opportunities, Boan tipped home a point shot from Carleen Meszaros to put the Cougars on the board. While there would be plenty of action at both ends of the ice, both goaltenders were solid and the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room.

The second period featured the same intense action, but both Schmidt and Langford continued to turn aside everything that was thrown at them. The Cougars outshot the Thunderbirds 16-9 in the middle frame.

Early in the third UBC drew a pair of penalties, but failed to convert with the 5-on-3 advantage. A few minutes later the Cougars would receive a power play opportunity of their own, and made no mistake with Brooklyn Moskowy finding the back of the net. Jennifer Schmidt turned away 24 shots in the third period to seal the win for the Cougars. Despite the loss Langford remained sharp in the UBC net, stopping 26 shots on the night.

The game saw over 40 minutes in penalties between the two teams, including 26 in the third period alone. It was the first meeting of the teams since last year's Canada West semifinals, which saw UBC take the series 2-1.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
