Triston Riemer's first goal of the year proved to be the game winner as the University of Regina Cougars defeated Mount Royal 2-0 in Canada West women's hockey action on Friday night.
Brooklyn Moskowy had the other goal for No. 6-ranked Regina, while
Jennifer Schmidt turned aside 25 shots for her second shutout of the year. Jess Ross took the loss in net for Mount Royal.
The first period saw plenty of chances by both teams. Mount Royal had two power play opportunities, but failed to convert on either of them. The period ended scoreless, with the shots 9-6 in favour of Mount Royal.

Despite intense pressure at times from Mount Royal, Schmidt stood tall in the Regina net. After another failed power play opportunity for Mount Royal midway through the final frame, the Regina defence took over and they cruised to their sixth win of the year.
Regina improves to 6-1-0 with the victory and stays atop the Canada West standings. There's now a four-way tie for second place behind the Cougars, as Alberta, UBC, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba all sport 4-2-1 records after Saturday's games. Schmidt is now a perfect 4-0 on the season, giving up only two goals and picking up a pair of shutouts. She also leads the league with a 0.49 goals against average and a sparkling .984 save percentage.
Mount Royal's record falls to 1-6-0. Rachel Piitz led the team with 7 shots on goal, while Ross stopped 24 shots in a losing effort.
The two teams will take to the ice once again tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop is slated for 3 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
