The University of Regina Cougars women's hockey team lost 4-3 to Mount Royal University on Saturday afternoon at The Co-operators Centre.

Reanna Arnold scored the game winning goal with 4:59 remaining in the third and added an assist for Mount Royal. Goaltender Jess Ross stopped 29 shots for the victory. Kelly Regnier, Katelyn Kennedy and Kylie Gavelin all scored for the Cougars, who lost for only the second time this season.

The first period saw plenty of chances by both teams. But it would be Mount Royal who would strike first, as Kathleen McDonald beat Cougar goalie Toni Ross. Regina out shot Mount Royal 9-7 in the opening frame.

Early in the second Regina struck back as the puck squeaked past the Mount Royal netminder. The goal was originally credited to Kylie Gavelin, but was later awarded to Kelly Regnier. Both teams failed to convert on power play opportunities, and the game would remain tied until the final minute of the period. With just 20.4 seconds on the clock, a wrister from Emily Harrison put Mount Royal up by a goal heading into the third.

Regina came out strong to start the final period. Just over a minute in, Katelyn Kennedy found the back of the net to tie the game at two. However less than two minutes later, Mount Royal's Rachel Piitz scored her first of the year to restore the one-goal lead.

Regina would strike again midway through the period on the power play. Kylie Gavelin walked into the slot and beat Jess Ross with a wrist shot to tie the game once again. But Mount Royal stormed back, as Reanna Arnold banked in the game-winning goal from behind the goal line off the stick of Toni Ross.

Mount Royal picked up its second win of the season, improving to 2-6-0. MRU will head home to host the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend.

With the loss, Regina falls to 6-2-0 but remains atop the Canada West standings with 12 points. The team will make the trek down the Trans-Canada next week for a pair of games in Manitoba. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night, and 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
