The University of Calgary men's hockey team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Regina Cougars 5-2 at The Co-operators Centre on Friday night.

Tyler Moir opened the scoring early for the Dinos, floating one over the shoulder of Cougars goaltender Lucas Gore. Calgary proceeded to control the play for most of the period, keeping the Cougars on the defensive. However, with 3:44 remaining Regina came back with a power play marker from rookie Brody Luhning to tie the game. The Dinos continued to pressure though, and just over two minutes later were rewarded with the go-ahead goal thanks to a fantastic individual effort from Kodie Curran.

Calgary dominated the second period of play. Controlling the puck for lengthy periods of time, the Dinos outshot the Cougars 15-5 and added three more goals. Chris Collins, Giffen Nyren, and Kevin King all found the back of the net for the Dinos with two of those goals coming on the power play.

The Cougars came out stronger in the third, killing off back-to-back penalties to Mark Schneider and Jordan Reeve. Just minutes later they managed to beat Calgary goaltender Kris Lazaruk when Brock Appleyard scored on a hard wrister from the top of the circle that beat Lazaruk over the shoulder.

However, that was as close as the Cougars would come. Despite going on the power play with seven minutes left, they couldn't convert and the Dinos skated to their first victory of the regular season.

Despite the loss, the Cougars saw strong play from captain Craig Cuthbert who assisted on both of Regina's goals, as well as first-year players Brody Luhning and John Neibrandt. Nyren was a force for Calgary, notching both a goal and an assist in the win.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
