Meghan Sherven scored late in the second and rookie
Bailey Braden had the overtime winner as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 2-1 overtime win over the Calgary Dinos on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Six minutes into overtime,
Carleen Meszaros fired a shot at Calgary goalie Amanda Tapp following a Dinos turnover. The rebound redirected off Meszaros's skate and Bailey tapped in the winner to collect her first career goal in her first Canada West game.
Jennifer Schmidt (pictured) stopped 23 of Calgary's 24 shots in the win as the Cougars (1-0-0) start the Canada West schedule on a winning note.
Calgary's Jayme Clark opened up the scoring with a power play goal with under seven minutes to go in the first period. The Dinos' 1-0 lead stood until with under two minutes left in the middle frame, when Sherven walked into the slot and fired a shot that beat Tapp and tied the game at 1-1 heading into the third.
Kylee Kupper and
Tori Head drew the assists on Sherven's effort, which was the second-year forward's first career goal.
The Cougars had a 34-24 advantage in shots and ended up 1-for-7 on the power play. Calgary's power play was 1-for-4 on the night.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Calgary (6:00).
