Box Score
The University of Regina Cougars fell 5-0 to the Alberta Pandas on Saturday afternoon in Canada West women's hockey action at The Co-operators Centre.
Amy Helfrich, Katie Stewart, Jayden Skoye, Tess Houston and Jessica Kampjes provided the offence for the Pandas, while Lindsey Post turned aside nine shots for the victory.
Toni Ross took the loss in net for the Cougars, stopping 28 shots.
The Pandas dominated the opening period. Less than two minutes in, Helfrich scored her second goal of the weekend to give Alberta a 1-0 lead. The Pandas then took advantage of their first power play opportunity of the game when a shot from Stewart went off a Cougar stick and slipped past Ross to put Alberta up by two. The Cougars would get a pair of chances with the man advantage, but could not get anything past Post. After 20 minutes the Pandas lead 13-3 in the shot department.
The second period was not much better for the Cougars. Despite having two more chances on the power-play, they had difficulties creating any offence and failed to capitalize on either opportunity. Ross continued to stand tall in the Cougars' net, stopping all twelve shots that came her way. Heading into the third, the Pandas continued to control the play. Just 2:18 into the frame Skoye found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season. Less than a minute later Montanna Noyes slipped a pass to Houston in the slot and she buried it to put the Pandas up by four. Kampjes scored with just over five minutes left to seal the win for Alberta.
With the win the Pandas improve their record to 7-3-2. Post also picked up her third shutout of the season, and they'll head back to Alberta for a home-and-home series next weekend against Calgary.
Meanwhile, the Cougars fall to 8-4-0 and will hit the road next week for a pair of games against Saskatchewan. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night.
