Box Score

The University of Regina women's hockey team beat the University of Manitoba Bisons 1-0 on Saturday night to open a weekend series in Winnipeg.

Triston Riemer scored her second goal of the year midway through the third, while Jennifer Schmidt stopped all 31 shots she faced for her third shutout of the season.

Neither team managed to score in the opening period. Manitoba had a pair of power play opportunities, but failed to convert on either of them. The Bisons lead 13-5 in the shot department.

The battle of the goaltenders continued into the second. Both the Cougars and the Bisons had a chance on the power play, but Schmidt and Manitoba goalie Amanda Schubert stopped everything that came their way.

The Cougars would finally break the scoreless tie midway through the third. Triston Riemer scored her second goal of the year on the power play with 8:18 remaining in the period. Despite pulling Schubert in the dying minutes, Manitoba could not find the back of the net, and the Cougars skated to a 1-0 victory.

With the win, Schmidt picks up her third shutout of the season. She now sports a perfect 5-0-0 record, with a 0.39 goals against average and a .987 save percentage.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon in Winnipeg. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
