The University of Regina Cougars and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies will renew their rivalry this week when the two teams meet in a Canada West men's hockey home-and-home series. They'll play on Wednesday night in Regina before finishing the two-game set on Thursday in Saskatoon.
The Cougars and Huskies are currently tied for third place in the Canada West standings with identical 6-6-0 records. They sit behind Alberta and Calgary who are both undefeated and share top spot in the conference.
Last weekend saw the Cougars drop a pair of games in Edmonton to the Alberta Golden Bears, losing 3-2 and 5-1.
Dillon Johnstone,
Brock Appleyard and rookie
Cody Fowlie did the scoring for the Cougars. Fowlie currently leads the Cougars offensively with three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 12 games. Fellow first-year players
Christian Magnus and
Brody Luhning are right behind him with nine points each.
Johnstone has also had a strong start since joining the team earlier this month. He picked up a goal and an assist and fired three shots on net last Friday in Alberta.
The Huskies come into the series after sweeping UBC last weekend, winning 6-3 on Friday night before shutting out the Thunderbirds 3-0 on Saturday. Saskatchewan is led by fourth-year forward Derek Hulak, who is at the top of Canada West scoring race with six goals and 14 assists for 20 points in just 12 games played. Kenton Dulle is also having a strong season for the Huskies, with 14 points on the season including three assists last weekend.
Both the Cougars and Huskies have strong goaltending. Fourth-year goaltender Ryan Holfeld has started all 12 games this year for the Huskies. He has a 2.01 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage, along with three shutouts. Meanwhile, the U of R's
Andrew Hayes sports almost identical numbers with a 2.01 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage, and a pair of shutouts.
The Cougars and Huskies split their season series last year. In November, the Huskies picked up a 2-1 overtime win, before the Cougars came back to win 2-1 the next night. When the teams clashed again in January, the Cougars skated to a 5-4 victory before falling 5-4 in overtime to the Huskies the following night.
The two teams met twice in non-conference action this year with both teams winning once. The Cougars beat Saskatchewan 3-1 at The Co-operators Centre back on Sept. 13, but the Huskies took a 5-2 win in Saskatoon later that month.
Both Wednesday's and Thursday's games this week face off at 7 p.m. All the action will be broadcast online at
