The University of Calgary Dinos scored four goals in the first seven minutes of the game and never looked back as they beat the Regina Cougars 8-2 in Canada West men's hockey action Friday evening.
Spencer Edwards and Chris Collins each had a pair of goals for the Dinos, while Drydn Dow chipped in with three assists. Cory Pritz, Kevin King, Giffen Nyren and Brooks Myers also scored for Calgary and Kris Lazaruk stopped 18 shots in goal for the win.
Lucas Gore took the loss in net for the Cougars, while
Austin Bourhis and
Cody Fowlie scored for Regina.
Pritz, King, Nyren and Edwards all found the back of the net for the Dinos before the seven minute mark of the first period. After Calgary's early barrage the Cougars were able to settle down and get out of the period without surrendering another goal. However the Dinos kept coming in the second, with Collins scoring less than five minutes into the period and Edwards notching his second of the night a few minutes later.
Calgary added two more goals midway through the third, off the sticks of Myers and Collins. The Cougars finally got on the board with less than four minutes left in the period, with
Austin Bourhis netting his second of the year.
Cody Fowlie also found the back of the net late in the period, but it was too little too late as the Dinos skated to an 8-2 victory.
Calgary improves to 14-0-1 and retains top spot in the Canada West standings. Meanwhile the Cougars fall to 8-7-0 and currently occupy third place.
The Cougars and Dinos meet once again tomorrow night in Calgary. The puck drops at 7 p.m. MST.
