Box Score
The University of Regina's women's basketball team defeated the Victoria Vikes by a 70-57 margin on Friday night in Game 1 of a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Lindsay Ledingham led the No. 2-ranked Cougars in both scoring and rebounding in the victory, ending up with 15 points and seven rebounds. Ledingham was one of five U of R players to score in double figures, as
Danielle Schmidt added 13 points,
Michelle Clark and
Brittany Read both collected 12, and
Megan Chamberlin came off the bench to score 10 points.
Chelsea McMullen had a team-high 11 points for No. 10 Victoria.
Though the Cougars led from wire to wire in the win, the game was tight for the entire first quarter and a large portion of the second. The U of R led 19-17 after the first and the game's first significant run for either team didn't come until the very end of the second, as the Cougars went on an 8-0 run over the final 2:30 of the quarter to take a 13-point lead into halftime.
The teams essentially traded points for the entire second half, as the U of R's biggest lead was 16 points and Victoria wasn't ever able to cut the deficit to single digits.
Debbie Yeboah added 10 points for the Vikes and pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds, while Cassandra Goodis scored seven points, led all players with seven assists, and added five rebounds.
Clark, Ledingham, and
Kehlsie Crone all had four assists for the Cougars, while
Jennilea Coppola and
Brittany Read both had three blocks.
Game 2 will tip off on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the CKHS. A win by the Cougars gives them a series sweep and a berth in next weekend's Canada West Final Four, while a Victoria victory would force a third and deciding game (Sunday, 4 p.m.).
NOTES: The Cougars improve their all-time postseason record against Victoria to 5-3.
