Box Score
Cody Fowlie and
Troy Hunter both scored for the University of Regina Cougars but it wasn't enough, as the UBC Thunderbirds skated to a 4-2 win Friday night in Canada West men's hockey action.
Cole Wilson scored a pair of goals for the Thunderbirds, while Steven Stanford made 27 saves in goal for the victory. Dillon Wagner and Ben Schmidt had the other markers for UBC.
Andrew Hayes took the loss in net for the Cougars.
The Thunderbirds opened the scoring 3:48 into the first period, as Wagner picked up a loose puck in the slot and found the back of the net. But the Cougars came right back less than two minutes later. With a bouncing puck in front of the net,
Cody Fowlie's shot just trickled through Stanford's pads to tie the game 1-1.
UBC would go ahead once again midway through the opening frame. Joe Antilla feathered a perfect pass to Wilson on a two-on-one and he made no mistake, roofing his team-leading eighth goal of the year. The Thunderbirds would add another one with less than three minutes to play in the first, off the stick of Ben Schmidt to take a 3-1 lead.
The second period was barely underway when
Christian Magnus came in on a breakaway for the Cougars, but his backhand shot was turned aside by Stanford. However the Cougars continued to pressure and it paid off less than three minutes into the frame. Fowlie cruised in over the blue line and went hard to the net. While his shot was stopped by Stanford, Hunter was right on the doorstep to slam home the rebound for his fourth goal of the year.
With about eight minutes left in the period UBC defenceman Wes Vannieuwenhuizen went down in the Thunderbird's zone and had to be helped off the ice, heavily favouring his right leg. He went straight to the dressing room, and didn't return for the remainder of the game.
The back-and-forth play continued in the final frame. Despite both the Cougars and Thunderbirds having a chance with the man advantage, Hayes and Stanford remained solid in net. However with 2:06 remaining in the game, Wilson finished off a scramble in the slot with his second goal of the game to put UBC up by two. The Cougars pulled Hayes in the final minutes but couldn't solve Stanford, and the Thunderbirds walked away with the 4-2 victory.
UBC improves to 6-10-1, while the Cougars see their record fall to 9-10-0 on the season.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night to wrap up the weekend series. Puck drop at The Co-operators Centre is at 7 p.m. You can also catch all the action live online at reg.canadawest.tv.
