The University of Regina Cougars men's hockey team will kick off the second half of its home schedule this weekend when the Cougars welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to The Co-operators Centre.
The Cougars are coming off a weekend split with the Lethbridge Pronghorns, cruising to a 3-0 victory last Friday before dropping a 4-1 decision to the Pronghorns on Saturday. They currently sit in fourth place in the Canada West standings with 18 points, trailing Saskatchewan by three points and up two points on Manitoba.
Andrew Hayes picked up the shutout on Friday and was named the Canada West Third Star of the Week. It was his third shutout of the season - the most ever by a Cougar in one season - and he also moved into a tie with Brant Hilton for the all-time lead with five career shutouts.
Last weekend also saw the debut of first-year forward
Ian McNulty, who was picked up by the Cougars over the Christmas break. He played for the Melville Millionaires last season, finishing with 27 goals and 69 points in just 49 games and adding eight points in 13 playoff games while taking home SJHL Player of the Year honours. He finished off the year by taking home Player of the Year honours. McNulty is coming off a stint at the pro level earlier this year with the Columbus Cottonmouths of the Southern Professional Hockey League and is expected to make his home debut in a Cougars uniform on Friday.
Rookie forward
Cody Fowlie, who picked up an assist and added eight shots on goal last weekend, leads the Cougars offensively with 16 points. Defenceman
Brody Luhning is close behind, scoring his second goal of the year against Lethbridge to add to his 11 assists for 13 points.
Meanwhile, UBC comes into the weekend following a pair of big wins in non-conference play. They took part in the Great Northwest Showcase in Burnaby last week, beating NCAA Div. I powerhouse University of North Dakota 3-2 in overtime before shutting out the Princeton University Tigers 1-0. The Thunderbirds are led by third-year forward Cole Wilson, who's got seven goals and 19 points in 16 games played. Second-year blueliner Neil Manning is also having a strong year and is currently third in league scoring among defencemen with 14 points in 16 games.
The Cougars and Thunderbirds split a pair of games in Vancouver back in October, with UBC skating to a 5-4 win before Hayes shut out the Thunderbirds 1-0 the following night.
Game time on both Friday and Saturday night is 7 p.m.
