The University of Regina Cougars women's hockey team had a rough night on Friday, dropping a 6-1 decision to the UBC Thunderbirds.

Tatiana Rafter scored a hat trick and added a pair of assists for UBC, while Danielle Dube made 13 saves for the win in goal. Haneet Parhar, Hannah Heisler and Sarah Casorso also found the back of the net for the Thunderbirds. Kendra Finch had the lone goal for the Cougars.

Rafter opened the scoring midway through the first on the power-play. But the Cougars answered right back with a goal of their own, off the stick of fifth-year forward Kendra Finch.

However that would be as close as the Cougars would come. Rafter scored her second of the game 24 seconds into the second period and completed the hat trick on another power play before the midway point of the game. Parhar found the back of the net for her first goal of the year to put the Thunderbirds up 4-1 heading into the third.

Goaltender Jennifer Schmidt came in for the final frame, replacing Cougars' starter Toni Ross. However UBC just kept coming, adding two more goals from Heisler and Casorso – both with the man advantage – to secure the 6-1 victory.

There were five penalties against the Cougars in the third period alone, and UBC went 4-for-9 on the power play. The Cougars were 0-for-4.

With the win, UBC extends their winning streak to five straight and improves their record to 15-3-1, good for 31 points and top spot in the Canada West standings.

The Cougars drop to 10-7-2 and currently sit in fifth place, just three points behind Manitoba, and four back of Saskatchewan.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night, with the opening face off set for 9 p.m. CST.
