Box Score
Melissa Goodwin scored just over five minutes into the first period, and Tatiana Rafter notched the game-winner in the shootout as the UBC Thunderbirds got past the University of Regina Cougars 2-1 in Canada West women's hockey action on Saturday night.
Brooklyn Moskowy scored the lone goal for the Cougars, while
Jennifer Schmidt stopped 33 shots in a losing effort. Danielle Lemon picked up the win between the pipes for the Thunderbirds.
UBC opened the scoring 5:16 into the first, as Goodwin potted her third goal of the year. Midway through the period Regina would strike back, with Moskowy finding the back of the net to tie the game 1-1.
That would be all the scoring in regulation, as both Schmidt and Lemon turned aside everything they faced in the second and third. UBC went 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Cougars couldn't get a goal on any of their six chances with the man advantage.
Overtime solved nothing, and the two teams headed to the shootout. Kathleen Cahoon beat Schmidt on UBC's first shot, and
Kendra Finch answered right back for the Cougars. However Meghan Shervan and
Stephanie Sawchuk were both denied by Lemon and Rafter slipped the puck past Schmidt to give the Thunderbirds the shootout victory.
With the win UBC remains in first place with a 16-3-1 record. The Thunderbirds will be in Alberta next weekend for a date with the Pandas.
Meanwhile, the Cougars see their record fall to 10-7-3. They'll be back on the road once again next weekend, traveling to Mount Royal for a battle of the Cougars. Puck drops at 8 p.m. (CST) on Friday night and 4:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday afternoon.
