It's the Battle of the Cats this weekend as the University of Regina Cougars hosts the Mount Royal Cougars this Friday and Saturday at The Co-operators Centre beginning at 7:00 p.m. on both nights.
Regina (9-10-1) is coming off a pair of tough losses to the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend. They fell 4-2 on Friday, before UBC overcame a 3-1 deficit and skated to a 4-3 shootout victory on Saturday. Rookie forward
Cody Fowlie continues to lead the team in scoring, picking up his fifth goal and 18th point in 20 games.
Liam Brennan also chipped in with a pair of assists and now has 14 points, including a team-leading eight goals.
Brody Luhning was held off the scoresheet last weekend against UBC, but still leads all Canada West rookie defencemen with 13 points. Expect
Andrew Hayes and
Lucas Gore to continue to split the netminding duties this weekend, as both goalies have started 10 games for the U of R this season. Hayes, who already has a school record three shutouts this season, needs just one more to surpass Brant Hilton as the U of R's all-time leader in career shutouts.
Mount Royal will wrap up a set of five games on the road in Regina, after dropping a pair of games to Manitoba last weekend. MRU now sits in seventh place in the Canada West standings with a 6-11-1 record and 13 points, just two back of UBC for the final playoff spot.
Mount Royal is led by second-year forward Devin Gannon, who notched his seventh goal of the campaign last weekend in Manitoba and has 11 assists for 18 points in as many games. Matthew Brown has also been having a strong season for Mount Royal with seven goals and 10 assists on the season.
Dalyn Flette has played the majority of the season in goal for Mount Royal, with a 3.29 goals-against average and an .891 save percentage to go along with a 6-9-1 record in 16 games played.
Over the break, Mount Royal added goaltender Cam Lanigan who spent five seasons in the WHL, most recently with Medicine Hat. He had a brief stint in the Central Hockey League with Arizona earlier this year, playing in three games for the Sundogs before enrolling at MRU. He's yet to make his Mount Royal debut, as Flette has started both games for the Cougars since Christmas.
The two teams last tangled back in October in Alberta. Regina came out on top 5-1 to open the weekend series before Mount Royal came back with a 5-2 win the next night.
After this weekend, Regina will have only six games remaining in the regular season. They'll hit the road on the final weekend of January to face Manitoba. Afterwards they'll return home to take on the Alberta Golden Bears, who have lost only twice all season. The U of R will finish the regular season off with a home-and-home series against the rival Saskatchewan Huskies.
