Mount Royal shuts out U of R

Emily Harrison scored twice, including the game-winner late in the second period as the Mount Royal Cougars women's hockey team beat the Regina Cougars 3-0 on Friday night.

Shyla Stadnicki also found the back of the net for Mount Royal, while Jess Ross turned aside all 32 shots she faced for her first shutout of the year. Jennifer Schmidt made 18 saves in the Regina net.

Neither team managed to score in the first period, although Mount Royal had a chance with the man advantage and Regina had a pair of power-play opportunities. Finally with under five minutes to play in the second, Harrison scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year to put Mount Royal on the board.

Just 1:12 later Mount Royal stuck again on a goal from Stadnicki to go up 2-0. Harrison potted her second of the night midway through the third to seal the victory.

With the win, Mount Royal picks up only their fourth win of the season and improves to 4-14-3. Regina sees their record drop to 10-8-3.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. (CST) in Calgary.

NOTES: Mount Royal out shot Regina 15-2 in the third period … this marks the fourth game in the 2013-14 season where Regina has failed to score a goal … Regina's all-time record against Mount Royal now stands at 4-2-1.
