Box Score

Dalyn Flette turned aside all 20 shots he faced in his second shutout of the season as the Mount Royal Cougars men's hockey team beat the University of Regina Cougars 3-0 on Saturday night.

Cody Cartier had a pair of goals for Mount Royal and Tyler Fiddler chipped in with a single. Andrew Hayes turned aside 32 shots in a losing effort for Regina.

The game opened with plenty of back-and-forth action, but Mount Royal got the first good chances with a 5-on-3 power play just five minutes into the period. Carter Selinger was sent off for hooking and then Brody Luhning was called for tripping, giving Mount Royal 1:41 with a two-man advantage. But thanks to some great defense and a couple solid saves from Hayes, Regina managed to kill it off.

Mount Royal drew first blood on the power play, just over 13 minutes into the period. With Liam Brennan in the box for tripping, Regina got caught on a line change and Cartier picked up a loose rebound in the slot, firing it into the net for his team-leading ninth goal of the year. Mount Royal added to their lead late in the period, once again on the power-play. Zach Evans-Renaud sent a slap-pass to Fiddler at the side of the net, who tipped it home on his backhand to put Mount Royal up by two.

Both teams came out strong in the second, with plenty of physical play. However Mount Royal got the period's only goal with only 47 seconds left on the clock. Devin Gannon threw a perfect pass to Cartier who snapped it over the outstretched glove of Hayes to give Mount Royal a 3-0 lead.

Mount Royal controlled the vast majority of the play in the first half of the third period. With less than six minutes to play Regina got a golden chance with a 5-on-3 power play, but despite some great chances Flette closed the door to seal the victory for Mount Royal.

With the win, Mount Royal improves to 8-11-1. They'll play a home-and-home series next weekend against the second-place Alberta Golden Bears.

Regina falls to 9-11-2 on the season, having dropped their fifth straight game. They'll now head into a much-needed bye weekend. The Cougars return to the ice on January 31 to kick off a weekend series in Manitoba.
